Hot Fixes Data Sources

Where the data on the Hot Fixes page of the Computer window comes from. See Computer Window Data Sources for how to read the Source column, and for the other pages of the Computer window.

Collected by the Hot Fixes scanner, which merges three sources and de-duplicates them by KB number:

•WMI Win32_QuickFixEngineering - the Windows servicing record.

•Uninstall registry entries that name a parent product, which is how installers register an update rather than an application.

•The Windows Installer patch registry under ...\Installer\UserData\<SID>\Products\<product>\Patches, for MSI patches.

NOTE: The registry and MSI-patch sources are merged by KB number, so a KB found by both appears once with the gaps filled in. The Windows servicing records are collected separately and are not merged with them, so a KB that Windows and an installer both record can appear twice - once with a Program and Version, once without. Updates delivered inside a cumulative package are not listed at all, which is why the list is shorter than the update history on the target.

Field

Derivation / Notes

Name

WMI / Registry

Win32_QuickFixEngineering.HotFixId, or the DisplayName of the update or patch.

Help Link

WMI / Registry

Win32_QuickFixEngineering.Caption, or the patch's MoreInfoUrl value. A Caption pointing at support.microsoft.com with a kbid query is rewritten to the current /help/<kb> form; MoreInfoUrl is stored exactly as the installer wrote it.

Description

WMI

Win32_QuickFixEngineering.Description, for example Security Update or Update.

Installed By

WMI

Win32_QuickFixEngineering.InstalledBy.

Installed On

WMI / Registry

Win32_QuickFixEngineering.InstalledOn, or the patch's Installed value. Windows records this inconsistently - sometimes as a date, sometimes as a file time - so a missing value here is common.

Program

Registry

The parent product the update belongs to - the uninstall entry's parent display name, or the DisplayName from the MSI product's install properties. Empty for updates found only in the Windows servicing records.

Version

Registry

For an MSI patch, the DisplayVersion of the parent product. For an uninstall-registry update, the update entry's own DisplayVersion - not the parent product's.

Publisher

Registry

For an MSI patch, the Publisher of the parent product. For an uninstall-registry update, the update entry's own Publisher.
