Hardware Data Sources

Where the data on the Hardware page of the Computer window comes from. See Computer Window Data Sources for how to read the Source column, and for the other pages of the Computer window.

Collected by the Hardware Devices scanner. Devices are enumerated with the Windows SetupAPI device list, which reports only devices present at scan time, and driver details are matched in from WMI Win32_PnPSignedDriver. Devices Windows hides from Device Manager, and legacy driver nodes, are left out.

Field

Source

Derivation / Notes

Class

Registry

The class description for the device's class GUID, from ClassDesc under HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\. That value normally points at a string resource, which is resolved to the localized text you see; where it cannot be resolved, the key's default value or the trailing text of the resource reference is used instead.

Name

SetupAPI

The device's friendly name, falling back to its device description when it has none.

Driver Provider

WMI

Win32_PnPSignedDriver.Manufacturer.

Driver Version

WMI

Win32_PnPSignedDriver.DriverVersion.

Driver Date

WMI

Win32_PnPSignedDriver.DriverDate.

Driver Signer

WMI

Win32_PnPSignedDriver.Signer - the authority that signed the driver package. Hidden.

NOTE: The Displays, NICs, and Computer scanners each build this device list themselves before they run, because they match their own results against it. The list is built once per scan, so whichever of those scanners runs first populates this page - running the Hardware Devices scanner on its own does not populate Displays or NICs.
